August Days

Summer ends in the heady days of early August
in the public school sense I still wallow
not yet mature enough, not yet rich enough to make sure
my own August days are languid and free
standing beside myself and wondering what to do until September arrives
a seasonal condition that has become antiquated
but still expected
in that wanderlusting trust-fund crowd
we all ache for purpose but if it doesn’t pay more than minimum wage
there will be nobody left who feigns…
