October Retro Horror Marathon 2024: Week 3
Even more horror to explore
Okay, we’re back on track with fun Halloween horror goodies this week. I found a few 1980s slasher films that I hadn’t heard of before that were fun to watch, as well as more modern titles that I hadn’t known about before my search this year. And of course, we also have to have some Stephen King thrown in for good measure.
Happy Birthday to Me (1981)
Now this is the type of movie that I love when I do these marathons. This is a classic slasher that was made just long ago enough to not totally freak me out. It is all about Ginny, a college student who seems to have a great group of friends, but she is also wrestling with something from her past. Then, all of her friends start dying and going missing, and no one knows why.
This movie stars Melissa Sue Anderson, so you know her work from Little House on the Prairie makes for a kinder, gentler horror movie experience. But what really got me about this movie was that the last fifteen minutes throws you a handful of plot twists, many that are common horror tropes now, but come as a surprise because there didn’t seem to be too many hints along the way.
Verdict: not scary, but a fun creepy experience
